Fleur de Sel

The production of Fleur de Sel is a delicate and painstaking one. Water from the Atlantic is carefully guided into shallow marshes through complex, winding waterways that narrow across large swathes of land; filtering the seawater before it fills the marshes in which it is concentrated. The delicate crystals of the salt require hand harvesting so as to not damage the snowflake-like structure, limiting the size of the salt pans to a size that can be tended to by-hand.

This very direct and hands-on method of production lends these spaces a geoglyphic quality when photographed from above. The winding lines and fastidiousness of the patterns imparts an almost religious devotion to the process and care of the land. Without a thorough understanding of their arcane methods, the forms give the impression of ancient abstractions carved into the land.
